Niagara County SPCA is getting into the Halloween spirit. The shelter is asking the community to enter pets in the first "Spooktacular Howl-O-Ween" photo contest for a chance to win some great prizes. Grand prize is a year of free Netflix and a year of free pizza from Just Pizza in Amherst. Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh and Acting Sheriff Michael Filicetti on Monday announced the next meeting of the county task force charged with complying with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's mandate that local governments undertake a police reform and reinvention collaborative initiative. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1334 Calumet Ave., Niagara Falls. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend to express their opinions.

The Greater Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Expo, one of the largest pure-fishing shows in the Great Lakes, is postponing its popular event at the Conference and Event Center Niagara Falls due to COVID-19. Conference Center officials are following New York state guidelines, as well as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, regarding what protocols need to be followed in an effort to keep attendees, vendors and Conference Center staff safe.

For the fall season, varsity/JV soccer (boys/girls), varsity golf (boys/girls), varsity tennis (girls), and varsity cross-country (boys/girls) are all on. Athletics move forward in a limited fashion, in alignment with the Niagara Frontier League and following strict state guidelines.

The U.S. Amy Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, reports the public comment period is now underway on the plans to what is referred to as the alternative 3 "balance of plant" remediation at the Niagara Falls Storage Site in Lewiston.

On Wednesday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a phone call from an alarm company stating a fire alarm was activated at the Niagara Frontier Country Club. Deputies and fire fighters responded to the scene and reported smoke coming from the main building at the country club. Once inside, it was the discovered there was a fire coming from kitchen area of the country club.

The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. - better known as HANCI - announced Tuesday it is the recipient of a $30,000 grant award from KeyBank, in partnership with the First Niagara Foundation. The grant was awarded to the nonprofit to implement a frontline worker education and care coordination/telehealth program.
