On Monday, Town of Lewiston Historian Marjorie L. Maggard and Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487 leaders Gordon Spencer and Vince Canosa updated the Board of Trustees on the "Hometown Heroes" program, which they're looking to implement locally in time for Memorial Day.

Buffalo may be the "City of Good Neighbors" but, just north in Niagara Falls, couples have been meeting, marrying and honeymooning for at least over 200 years. It was future U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr's daughter who put Niagara Falls on the map as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," but the real reason why coupling may be occurring against the backdrop of a world wonder may have more to do with science than beautiful scenery.

The Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co. held its 112th Installation Dinner and Awards gathering on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Youngstown firehall. The event featured a number of swearing-in ceremonies for the various officers representing YVFC's 65 members, as well as recognition paid to some special individuals who serve the company.

For the 18th time, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center (NFMMC) will host its signature black-tie gala, The Premier, on April 29 at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. The annual event, which traditionally attracts over 900 guests from Western New York, raises funds for NFMMC and its services.

The six-week workshop is scheduled on Thursdays, March 30 through May 4, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the North Tonawanda Public Library.

Ransomville Speedway hosted a drivers registration meeting at the Ransomville Fire Co. on Sunday afternoon. Drivers had the opportunity to reserve pit pads, register their cars, purchase track memberships and DIRTcar licenses. Ransomville Speedway officials, including tech inspectors and the race director, were on hand to answer any questions.

The Mental Health Association in Niagara County will host a meat raffle fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the St. Johnsburg Firehall, 7165 Ward Road, North Tonawanda. Proceeds from the sales will go toward programming and services for those living with a mental health diagnosis in Niagara County.

Congressman Brian Higgins joined Niagara Falls City School District Superintendent Mark Laurrie on Friday to announce a five-year grant totaling close to $3.5 million. Awarded by the U.S. Department of Education and funded by the School-Based Mental Health Services program, the grant will be used to support school and community mental health programs while creating opportunities for local graduate students.

On Thursday, at 8:12 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a 911 call reporting smoke in the apartment building located at 136 Jackson St., in the Village of Youngstown. NCSO deputies and officers from the Town of Lewiston Police Department responded and confirmed smoke coming from the second floor of the building.

Brand-new traffic lights and street signs have been installed at the intersection of Center and Fifth streets in the Village of Lewiston. This is part of the streetscape project that began in 2022, and was funded by the New York State Department of Transportation.

Niagara University has received a $300,000 grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation to continue and enhance work done by its College of Nursing to foster nurse resilience, effectively bridge the transition from student to health care professional, address a critical shortage in the nursing workforce, increase awareness of health inequities, and develop effective approaches to care in complex environments across Western New York, with an emphasis on Niagara County.

The Niagara Falls Police Department is searching for 15-year-old Lorelai R. Russell, who was reported missing on Tuesday. Lorelai was last seen wearing a gray hoodie with anime characters, and sweatpants. She is 5 feet, 2 inches tall; approximately 80 pounds; and possibly traveling out of state and considered vulnerable.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) has been awarded a $450,000 federal grant. The funding, made possible through the "Bipartisan Infrastructure Law," supports NFTA's development of a regional safety action plan for Erie and Niagara counties.

Parachute Credit Counseling - formerly known as Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Buffalo (CCCS) - announced it is launching the ninth year of its "Niagara County Free Tax Preparation Program" on Jan. 31. Parachute will use a "drop-off" process, with sites in Niagara Falls at Pinnacle Community Services, 1522 Main St.; and in Lockport, at the Lockport Library, 23 East Ave.

USA Niagara Development Corp., an arm of Empire State Development, approved a five-year contract with Destination Niagara USA to manage the Niagara Falls Convention Center, which started in January of 2022. As the lead tourism promotion agency for Niagara County, Destination Niagara USA seized the opportunity to increase sales and leverage existing strengths with their team and community partners.
