Three seventh-grade students at Edward Town Middle School recently held a fundraiser to support the SPCA of Niagara.

Lauren Sherman, Sam Tycz, and Marissa Guilani, along with the help of their art teacher, Jill Hessinger, raised $200 selling artwork. For six weeks, the girls spent their free periods making clay ornaments, birdhouses, mugs, beads and bowls. Other students also donated artwork that had been made in class.

Not only did they enjoy helping the SPCA, but the girls also liked spending time working on the projects together.

"We enjoyed taking our time making all the products," Tycz said. Sherman and Guilani agreed. "I think it was mostly fun because we did it together," Sherman said.

Once the products were completed, they set up a table outside of the cafeteria to sell their work.

"We didn't think we'd generate a lot of interest, but we did," Hessinger said.

Even without advertising, the fundraiser was a success. The students also offered gift-wrapping for buyers who wanted to give the artwork as a present. Within an hour, half the products were gone. By the end of the day, they were completely sold out.

"Next year we should make a lot more," Guilani said.

They chose to donate to the SPCA because all three girls share a love of animals, and have pets of their own. They are hoping to make this fundraiser an annual event and raise even more money next year.

"It's going to help the animals, which is really good," Guilani said.

Madison King is an eighth-grader at Edward Town Middle School.
