The Western New York (WNY) Armed Forces Week committee announced the return of its signature events to the historic Connecticut Street Armory this May, marking a vibrant celebration of local military service and community support.

For 63 years, the committee has honored the dedication of service members in Western New York. Armed Forces Week 2026 features three marquee events: the civic luncheon on May 7, the formal military ball on May 9, and the Armed Forces Day 5K Run sponsored by Russell J. Salvatore on May 16. These gatherings invite the community to come together and celebrate the achievements and sacrifices of those who serve in the United States Armed Forces.

The Connecticut Street Armory, built in 1899, stands as an iconic symbol of Buffalo’s military and civic heritage. Over the years, its storied halls have hosted pivotal moments of service, camaraderie and community pride. By hosting the Armed Forces Week luncheon and military ball in this historic venue, the committee celebrates both today’s military heroes and Buffalo’s rich legacy of supporting the armed forces, honoring generations who have served and sacrificed.

A highlight of the week will be the recognition of 14 outstanding military service members from the five military branches serving the Niagara Frontier. These honorees will be celebrated at the WNY Armed Forces Week military ball in recognition of their exemplary service and commitment to the nation.

“Volunteering to serve one’s country is among the highest deeds,” said Frank Caruso, civilian chairman. “Supporting those who protect our safety and security is a vital responsibility for every American citizen.”

Major Gen. (Ret.) David J. Conboy, military chairman added, “Those of us who wear, or have worn our nation’s cloth, are grateful for the steadfast support of the civilian community we are privileged to serve. That bond between our armed forces and the American people is a source of strength, pride and purpose for every service member and veteran.”

This year’s Armed Forces Week will also spotlight the enthusiastic support of local youth military organizations. Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) units, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Civil Air Patrol squadrons, the Western New York Maritime Charter School, and other youth groups will contribute to the week’s ceremonies, provide color guards, and play active roles throughout the events. Their participation highlights the next generation’s commitment to service and strengthens Buffalo’s connection to military tradition.
