Hurley, Long named winners of 57th Hewitt Scholar/Athlete Awards

Board of associates of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital held event at Niagara Frontier Golf Club; program presented by Mount St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation

Quinn Hurley of Starpoint High School and Matthew Long of Lewiston-Porter High School were named winners of the 57th Thomas E. Hewitt Scholar/Athlete Awards. Each received a $2,500 scholarship. The awards were presented by the board of associates of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in a ceremony held at the Niagara Frontier Golf Club. The program was sponsored by the Mount St Mary’s Hospital Foundation.

Fourteen scholar athletes from eight area high schools were nominated for the honor.

Quinn is the class valedictorian and has earned a 102.01 weighted grade average.

She is president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the math honor society and member of the science honor society. Quinn has earned honor roll recognition throughout high school and is a College Board AP Scholar with honors recipient. 

She is vice president of the student council and former vice president and treasurer of the senior class. She has been a member of the donate life club, yearbook club and diversity club.

Quinn was co-captain of the field hockey team and the outdoor track and field team. She was also co-captain of the lacrosse team and is a volunteer field hockey coach.

She plans to attend the University of Michigan as a student in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. She will major in biology with a goal of attending medical school. Quinn is the daughter of Robin and Thomas Hurley.

Matthew has earned a 102.56 weighted grade average.

He earned high honor roll recognition throughout high school, is a member of the National Honor Society, science honor society and Spanish honor society. He is also an AP Scholar.

Matthew was captain of the Science Olympiad, a member of Leadership for Youth of Niagara (LYNC), a research presenter at the International Student Science Fair (Brisbane, Australia), and a NYSSMA trumpet solo presenter. He actively serves as an EMT and volunteer with Lewiston No. 1 Fire Co. He was captain of the varsity swimming team, leading the team to an NFL championship this year.

Matthew plans to major in biology at Niagara University. He has secured admission to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine via the early acceptance program with a goal of becoming a physician. Matthew is the son Christina and Brett Long.

Other female nominees include: Hailey Martinez, Grand Island High School; Emily Mountain, Lewiston-Porter High School; Melia Towns, Lockport High School; Ava White, Niagara Falls High School; Alyssa Caito, Niagara-Wheatfield High School; Erika Kellar, North Tonawanda High School; and Abigail Freatman, Wilson High School.

Other male nominees include: Elijah Linenfelser, Grand Island High School; Bryce Rodgers, Niagara Falls High School; Joseph Gavacs, Niagara Wheatfield High School; Gavin Farrell, Starpoint High School; and Brayden Lepsch, Wilson High School.
