'Our Waters, Our Future: Saving Scajaquada Creek' expected to have over 200 guests, with all proceeds supporting creek restoration efforts

Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper announced its second annual waterfront event, "Our Waters, Our Future: Saving Scajaquada Creek," will raise funds to clean up the impaired Scajaquada Creek.

From 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, Riverkeeper will gather supporters and partners at a special waterfront celebration at Marcy Casino, in Delaware Park. Scajaquada Creek runs underneath the building, making it an ideal location to acknowledge this challenged waterway's history and to look forward to a brighter future.

"It has never been more important to stand up for our local waterways, and we need our community's support to restore Scajaquada Creek to its full potential," stated Jill Jedlicka, executive director of Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper. "The creek has endured more than 100 years of abuse, yet still clings to life and is ready for restoration, and this September we will celebrate our vision for the creek's bright future."

More than 200 guests are anticipated to attend Riverkeeper's signature event, which will feature a raffle of local artwork and a Hornbeck canoe, live music by High Horse Band, and views of Hoyt Lake. Beverages will be donated by Labatt USA and its parent company, North American Breweries. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Magnolia Events.

This year's recipient of the Mike Hamilton Memorial Award is Lynda Schneekloth. A nationally renowned environmental advocate, Schneekloth was one of the founders of the organization in 1989, when Riverkeeper was known as Friends of the Buffalo River. She served as a board member for many years, and still serves the organization in her role as an emeritus member of the board of directors. Schneekloth has dedicated her life to environmental issues, notably the protection of the Great Lakes and of Western New York waterways through prevention of hazardous waste issues. In recent years, she has also been one the region's strongest advocates on climate change issues.

Tickets are $35 per person, and can be purchased in advance at www.bnriverkeeper.org/tickets or by calling 716-852-7483, ext. 38. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door.
