Congressman Chris Collins announced $82,488 in federal funding for two local fire companies: $65,315 will be allocated to Bergholz Volunteer Fire Co. in Niagara County, and $17,143 will be allocated to Bennington Volunteer Fire Co. in Wyoming County. The grants were allocated through the Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which is designed to help first responders improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.

"Providing the necessary funding for our first responders is an excellent and prudent use of federal money," Collins said. "Our local heroes need the proper resources to do their jobs and protect our communities. Many small fire companies and emergency medical service providers are unable to purchase necessary equipment upgrades due to financial limitations. This funding will help create more efficient and effective first responders, and I am honored to help these local fire companies secure federal grants."

"Receiving this grant is a huge accomplishment for our fire company," said Mark Stevens of Bergholz Fire Co. "The funding will equip our firefighters with up-to-date turnout equipment and allow us to safely and efficiently accomplish our firefighting duties."

"These awarded grant funds will be used to purchase 12 complete sets of firefighter turnout gear, to include the turnout coat and bunker pants," said Jim Dick, fire chief of Bennington Volunteer Fire Co. "The award of these grant funds will provide our personnel with the highest standards of gear available today, which will enhance our ability to serve and protect our community."
