Assemblyman John Ceretto today recommended the state look into buying a snow coach to help people stranded on the Thruway during a big snowstorm. Snow coaches can drive over snow and hold dozens of people. These could be used in emergency situations to rescue people stuck on the Thruway or those having emergency health issues at home during a snowstorm.

"Living in Western New York, we all know that lake effect snow is a reality we must deal with every year," Ceretto said. "While the response to this most recent episode has been good, equipping our emergency personnel with snow coaches would be a very effective way to help people stranded on the roads and in other emergency situations.

"Our first responders do a great job when faced with these conditions. Unfortunately, their vehicles are often slowed down by snow. A snow coach would help make our response to these problems quicker and more efficient."

Ceretto proposes establishing a commission to explore the feasibility of acquiring snow coaches. He said this should not be an unfunded mandate on local first responders. Instead, the state should look for federal grant money as a possible source of funding.
