Spring has finally arrived in Lewiston, and with it the 19th annual Lewiston Family Spring Fling.

Sponsored by the Village of Lewiston Recreation Department the 2014 edition of Spring Fling takes place Sunday, April 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Red Brick Municipal Building, 145 N. Fourth St.

Village Recreation Director Marianne Gittermann reports the Spring Fling committee has kept all of the event's favorites on for this year.

•It opens with the Lewiston Kiwanis and Lewiston Service Guild One Mile Run for youths 14 and under. Registration opens at 11:45 a.m. on the Onondaga Street end of the Red Brick School. The race itself begins at 12:30 p.m. and is run on flat ground throughout its course.

Race shirts, courtesy of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club, Lewiston Service Guild, Venture Forthe and Stuart Sports, will be given to the first 100 youths registering. The race is held rain or shine.

Youth participants must fill out an application form and a parent's signature is necessary. Parents may run the course with the younger runners. Awards will be presented in age categories. There is no fee for the race.

Currently the Village Recreation Department is looking for volunteers to help with race course safety. For more information, contact Gittermann at 754-1990 or 754-8271.

•At 1 p.m., the encore presentation of Historic Postcards of Lewiston - Series 4 will be on display in the gym. "This is a great selection of historic photos normally not in the public eye," says Gittermann. The show is presented in conjunction with the Lewiston Museum.

•Also at 1 p.m. a street art contest will get underway for youth artists of all school ages. Chalk will be provided and the competition will be judged at approximately 3 p.m.

•The basket auction will run from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Featured will be a wide selection of prizes - from an autographed basketball by Mike Miller of the Memphis Grizzlies, plus another donated by his team, to tickets for Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, Artpark, the Maid of the Mist, Old Fort Niagara and the Castellani Art Museum.

Also in the mix: a boy's bike and a variety of prizes for children and adults.

•Music at Spring Fling will be provided by Asylum Productions. Also this year there will be a free petting zoo on the Red Brick grounds as well as a Hover Car ride and Bounce-n-Around. Niagara Pioneer Soccer League representatives will have their soccer kick speedometer on site for budding soccer players, and a balloon sculptor and face painter will be present from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

•Spring Fling will again offer a community atmosphere, with "bring a dessert to pass." Hot dogs and beverages will be provided at no charge.

Spring Fling is open to residents and nonresidents alike.

"This is a great way to renew friendships and to welcome new residents to Lewiston," Gittermann says. "Bring the family and friends."

There is no charge for the events. For further information, call 716-754-1990 or 716-754-8271.
