United Way hosting second annual 24-hour online fundraising event to benefit local nonprofits
United Way of Buffalo & Erie County has announced it will host its second annual "Spring It On"campaign, a 24-hour online fundraising event to be held Thursday, March 20 - the first day of spring.
The event is designed to raise awareness and funds for not-for-profit organizations throughout Western New York with a unique one-day focus. In 2013, the program's first year, 182 nonprofit organizations in Erie and Niagara counties participated and raised more than $76,000. More than 120 agencies have signed up for the 2014 event so far, and organizers hope that number will rise substantially in the coming weeks.
This year, the event has been expanded to include Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Allegany and Orleans counties. It will run from 8 a.m. March 21 until 8 a.m. March 22. Any interested 501(c)(3) organizations providing services in those counties are eligible to participate.
The event seeks to mobilize citizens for one day of giving to strengthen and support the community. Individuals can make a one-time, secure, online donation to the local not-for-profit agency of their choice through a specially designed website, www.springiton.org. The event was created and is powered by the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County.
United Way and participating agencies will encourage supporters to contribute during "Spring It On" through social media messaging, website communication and traditional marketing initiatives.
Michael Weiner, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County president and CEO said, "We were delighted with the level of participation in 'Spring It On' last year, and are confident that this year will be an even bigger success. It is a great way for nonprofit organizations to extend their reach to new audiences through social media and online communications for relatively little investment, and it provides a focal point for the community to get mobilized to give. Even the smallest organization, with focus and creativity, can reach new constituents with their unique story through 'Spring It On.' "
"Spring It On" is modeled on similar events held in other cities across the country, including Rochester's successful "ROC The Day" event.
Organizations interested in participating should contact Patty Olender at 716-887-2637 to learn more and to register.
"Spring It On" updates will be posted in the coming weeks, and throughout the event, on United Way of Buffalo and Erie County's Facebook page and Twitter account via #SpringItOn2014. For more information, visit www.springiton.org
