Lewiston's ChrisFit is launching a new workout program just for women. The barre class, personal trainer Karen Tweedie-Oakley explained, is a "total body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs and burns fat."
"It is strictly geared to women, to work their problem areas," she said. The program, popular in New York and Los Angeles, "is trickling in (locally), and the success stories that I have read about is phenomenal - what it has done to reshape and tone a female's body - especially in the areas we struggle with."
The barre program is inspired by ballet classes and uses small, isometric movements set to upbeat music.
"These techniques protect your joints, because the class does not involve bouncing or jumping," Tweedie-Oakley said. "Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section to create long, lean muscle."
Participants are encouraged to wear grip-socks. ChrisFit will provide all other workout equipment.
"We use a mat. We use a double-ring tubing. We use light weights and a small ball. That's all that's necessary for the class," Tweedie-Oakley said. "Anybody, as long as they have the ability to get up and down from a mat, can do the class. You don't have to be at a fitness level to do the class."
For those who've thought about joining ChrisFit, or who are just interested in trying the class, the exercise studio is offering a special incentive (and a way to give back):
"To launch this, because it's so new to this area, I thought it would be really cool if we could put together a food drive at the same time, where if anybody ... new member or non-member, comes in with 10 canned goods, we will bring those canned goods to the local soup kitchen and, in turn, you'll get a day-pass so you can try the new class," Tweedie-Oakley said.
The promotion runs throughout the month of October. Classes, meanwhile, run Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:15 a.m., and Saturdays at 8 a.m., and cost $10 (free for members).
Registration is not required, but exercisers are asked to come in 10-15 minutes early to arrange their equipment.
