The Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo, presents Shanghai Ballet in "The Butterfly Lovers" on Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre. The performance is sponsored by M&T Bank.
The Shanghai Ballet, under the direction of former principal dancer Xin Lili, has a 34-year history of performing classical western ballet, contemporary dance, and folk-styled Chinese national ballet. An audience favorite, "The Butterfly Lovers" features a full corps of dancers, costumes, and a touching story of love and loss.
Often considered the Chinese equivalent to "Romeo & Juliet," "The Butterfly Lovers" is a poignant love story that dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The ballet follows a young couple's ill-fated romance, demonstrated through elegant choreography, splendid costumes, and evocative sets depicting both natural and supernatural worlds throughout.
