Amid drenching rain and unseasonably cold temperatures, baseball teams from Depew, Lewiston-Porter, Starpoint and Wilson followed through on their commitment and played in the "Homerun for Hospice" tournament April 10. The event raised an impressive $2,137.80 for Niagara Hospice.

Lew-Port varsity coach Mark Waple organized the event as a way for the players to learn the importance of giving back to the community.

"I'm proud of all of the players. They did a great job and we were glad to be able to help Niagara Hospice with our donation," he said.

Players from each school collected donations before the tournament, while sponsorships from local businesses and community members helped make the event a success.

"The players did a great job raising money, and our sponsors were so generous to donate to the event," said Niagara Hospice's Maureen Rizzo.

Niagara Hospice has provided end-of-life comfort, care and support since 1988 to more than 20,000 Niagara County individuals and families faced with terminal illness. For more information, visit www.NiagaraHospice.org or call Hospice at 716-439-4417.
