The University at Buffalo's Office of Economic Development has initiated a series of roundtable discussions with industry members that will pinpoint challenges and guide enhanced relationships between the university and business community in pursuit of economic development.

The first roundtable was hosted on May 10 at Cameron, a global manufacturer with operations in downtown Buffalo. More than 30 attendees from Western New York businesses took part.

Topics discussed included the needs of local industry and how UB research assets can help meet those needs; how UB can help businesses commercialize new products or services; equipping students with the skills that are most valuable in today's market; UB's role in upcoming regional economic initiatives like Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Buffalo Billion Investment Development Plan; and more.

The roundtables continue UB's effort to help improve Western New York's economy by partnering with businesses to discover innovative technologies and solutions that will grow companies and create jobs.

The series will include additional events periodically over the coming year as part of an ongoing effort to ensure local businesses know how to take full advantage of the technological, research and business development capabilities and talent available through UB.

Examples of the many local businesses that have benefited from UB partnerships include Greatbatch, which worked with UB's Center for Advanced Biomedical and Bioengineering Technology (UB CAT) to support the development and enhancement of products; IBC Digital, which collaborated with UB's Center for Computational Research to accelerate production of digital media products; and Applied Sciences Group, which licensed new software technology through UB's Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach (STOR).

"These roundtable discussions will provide critically important feedback from our valued business partners so we can build on the diverse ways local industry is already connecting with UB," said Marnie LaVigne, Ph.D., associate vice president for economic development. "We encourage local businesses of all sizes to reach out and discover how UB can help you meet your goals while we work together to grow the regional economy."
