Annual event fights hunger - one step at a time

Community Missions of Niagara Frontier Inc. will host its 11th annual Feet or Famine Walk on Saturday, April 27, at Whirlpool State Park. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., with the walk following shortly after at 11:15 a.m. The event will also include a classic car show, 50/50 raffle, prizes, and a light picnic lunch. Between 100 and 200 walkers are expected to attend. Pets on leashes are welcome.

Individuals interested in the walk are asked to collect pledges and donations from family and friends in support of their participation. Sponsorship opportunities are also available and are another great way to support those less fortunate in the community. All proceeds from this event will benefit Community Missions' crisis services programs, which include a community soup kitchen, food pantry, clothes closet, parole re-entry program, Mark's Place (HIV/AIDS residence), and homeless shelter.

Current sponsors include GEICO and LocalEdge. Additional supporters of the walk include Maid of the Mist, Olympia Sports, Tops, Wendy's and Nutrilite.

In 2012, Community Missions served more than 70,000 meals, provided crisis housing to more than 600 individuals, and provided more than 9,000 nights of care to neglected or abused children and homeless adults. Since its founding in 1925, Community Missions has provided a unique blend of referral, crisis, community support, and residential services for youth and adults. These services are offered in cooperation with churches, groups, clubs, other providers and government agencies.
