The legendary and fearsome Masai warriors would return from battle and inquire of those charged with protecting their families "Kasserian Ingera?" This means "And how are the children?" The reply "All the children are well" indicated that peace and safety had prevailed - that the young and powerless were secure.

On Thursday, March 14, Peace of the City Ministries will convene an evening of advocacy, truth-telling and fundraising for Buffalo's children at the Wesleyan Church of Hamburg. A panel of experienced practitioners will address the question "And How are Buffalo's children?" Speakers include David Rivera, councilman for the Niagara District and former Buffalo detective; the Rev. Jeff Carter, former chaplain at Attica State Prison; Jill Robbins-Jabine, director of school-based supports for Say Yes! Buffalo; and Jennifer Huber, field manager for Buffalo Promise Neighborhoods and former BPS teacher.

Since 1992, Peace of the City Ministries has been rolling up its sleeves and getting to work on behalf of Buffalo's children. The west side not-for-profit organization strives to care for and empower the children and teenagers of the poor and working poor. In contrast to a drop-in community center, Peace of the City fosters a distinct family environment with programming that includes literacy intervention, creative arts, job readiness, summer Shakespeare and small business development.

Dancing to Ellie Goulding's "In My City," and performing a theater piece with inspiration drawn from relevant teen literature and music, Buffalo's very own youth will answer the aforementioned question in their own voices. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program starts promptly at 6:45 p.m. Desserts will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Peace of the City's two small businesses, Zieani Jewelry and "Sanctuary- Where Fragrance, Faith and Futures Combine," will have plenty of inventory for sale.

Donations will be collected to support the work of Peace of the City, as organizers hope to continue to serve on the west side for another 20 years. All proceeds go to benefit Peace of the City. There is no charge for this event, but reservations are greatly appreciated.
