Lynn Alan Konovitz, director of the Grand Island Memorial Library, reports that a digital collection of the Island Dispatch is now available online.
"After many years, the digitization of the Island Dispatch is completed for the years 1989-2008," Konovitz reports, noting that the 20 years of editions encompass 1,036 issues.
The ongoing digitization project is run through the Western New York Library Resources Council and member institution Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. The Dispatch issues are now available on the New York Heritage website at http://cdm16694.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/VHB008.
New York Heritage is a collaborative project among New York state's nine Reference and Research Library Resources Councils (NY3Rs), including the Western New York Library Resources Council.
The NY3Rs, funded by New York state, work with their member institutions (libraries, archives, museums and historical societies) to digitize original research materials and make those materials available for free on the Internet. The councils are continually adding new collections to www.nyheritage.org and actively seek collections to expand the site.
The Island Dispatch is the official newspaper of the Town of Grand Island and has been published since 1944. All the Erie County newspaper collections on New York Heritage are accessed at http://www.nyheritage.org/newspapers/county/erie.
