The Niagara USA Chamber released the following statement Tuesday:
"The Niagara USA Chamber recognizes the iconic nature of the Maid of the Mist attraction in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and the long-term commitment the corporation has made to our community and region for decades. The chamber believes the Maid of the Mist has a valid contract with New York state that is in full effect and should be honored.
"Furthermore, the chamber believes that the recent uncertainty that has been caused by the Canadian procurement for boat service on their side of the border underscores the fact that it is in our best interest to have winter boat storage and docking facilities on the American side of the border. This would allow New York state to independently procure future boat service contracts irrespective of any Canadian action.
"As such, the Niagara USA Chamber supports Gov. Cuomo's plan to allow the Maid of the Mist to build winter storage facilities at the site of the former Schoelkopf Power Plant. This ensures the future of the American attraction, improves access and amenities at the site, which has been nothing more than debris, and improves the amount the state will collect from the Maid of the Mist attraction over the life of the existing contract."
