The Queen City Roller Girls will hold tryouts for women ages 18 and over on Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rainbow Rink in North Tonawanda. Any skater who joins the league and passes assessments will be eligible for the 2013 QCRG Home Team Draft and to tryout for the Lake Effect Furies.

All sizes, shapes and levels of experience are welcome. Recruits will be tested on fundamental skills such as crossovers, side-to-side stepping and starts and stops. No in-depth experience is needed; the tryouts are simply to ensure that incoming members have basic skating skills and show a promise of commitment to the league.

Skaters who are admitted will start in the league's training group, Queen's Court, on Sunday evenings. There, they will build endurance, skill and knowledge of game play. Between January and October there will be multiple opportunities to play in scrimmages and bouts.

Gear requirements for the tryouts include quad-speed roller skates (no high-tops), kneepads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet and a mouth guard. A limited number of rental skates and equipment may be available for those who contact the league ahead of time. However, it is recommended that skaters purchase their own gear and quad skates prior to tryouts.

The cost for a one-day Women's Flat Track Derby Association insurance coverage for the tryouts is $20. There are no additional fees. Skaters must have and maintain their own personal health insurance in order to continue to skate in the league.

On Nov. 28, QCRG representatives will be available at Rainbow Rink's adult open skate from 8 to 10 p.m. to answer questions for incoming recruits and assist with basic skating skills.
