'Stay Well on Your Feet' program offers free seminar for older adultsby jmaloni
As individuals reach the age of 60 and older, they may begin to experience changes to their mind, body and spirit. "Stay Well on Your Feet" is a free health promotion program geared toward identifying these changes and providing tips for maintaining quality living.
This energized program is presented by the Niagara County Coalition for Falls Prevention, consisting of The McLaughlin Center for Senior Wellness of DeGraff Memorial Hospital, The Niagara County Office for the Aging, the Niagara County Department of Health, and the Visiting Nurses Association of WNY.
The next scheduled session will be a four week series held on Tuesdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. starting Nov. 13 at the DeGraff Community Center. Each 90-minute session includes registration, presentation by a health professional, time for discussion, a healthy snack and giveaways. Health screens will be offered.
The schedule includes:
- Nov. 13, "Aging Gracefully" will give a lighthearted, humorous look at age-related health issues.
- Nov. 20, "Falls Prevention Around the Home." This session, led be a physical therapist, gives opportunity for education, discussion and self-evaluation on risk for falls. Interactive participation will demonstrate management tools for flexibility, strength-building and balance exercises.
- Nov. 27, "You Are What You Eat." This session, led by a nutritionist, helps seniors to make better, more nourishing choices in the variety and quantity of foods they select.
- Dec. 4, "Medication Management" encourages understanding of the medications one takes and the importance of ongoing evaluation by pharmacists and physicians to oversee proper dosage and use.
