The Lewiston-Porter Academy of International Business and Finance, a volunteer group of professionals that provides students with knowledge and skills intended to give them an advantage in their future academic and professional careers, has announced one of its latest student endeavors.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, Lew-Port senior Sara DiFiore, a pilot student of the Lewiston-Porter Academy of International Business and Finance, will be running her own blood drive with the American Red Cross at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 915 Oneida St., in the Village of Lewiston. "The American Red Cross is currently experiencing a blood shortage and therefore the work Sara is doing will not only fulfill her academy requirement, but will fulfill a need within our communities and beyond," the academy commented.

DiFiore is one of five pilot students participating in the academy's internship program at Lewiston-Porter Senior High School. The students were chosen through an application/interview process for various summer training internships with local businesses that have an international presence. DiFiore was accepted with the American Red Cross, where she has been traveling to their main office in Buffalo and throughout Erie and Niagara counties with her on-the-job supervisor. Her responsibilities involve every aspect of preparing for and implementing local blood drives.

The academy notes the American Red Cross has been contending with a severe blood shortage this summer and is actively seeking donations. Area residents who have been considering donating blood are encouraged to help this partnership blood drive become a great success by stopping in between 1 and 7 p.m. on Aug. 23. DiFiore has gathered volunteers to help for the day, and local businesses will be participating with donated food to make this a great event.
