The longtime rivalry between Canisius and Niagara continued Thursday night at Dwyer Arena on the campus of Niagara University. It was a large crowd that witnessed the Niagara Purple Eagles defeat the Canisius Golden Griffins by a score of 4-2.

Niagara got off to a fast start with a quick goal from Giancarlo Iuorio 54 seconds into the game, and three minutes later Isaac Kohls gave Niagara a 2-0 lead. Canisius took it to Niagara at the start of the second period, and got on the board 1:19 into the period by a goal from Tyler Weisman to reduce the lead to 2-1.

Niagara responded quickly to the Weisman goal by cashing in a goal of its own just 37 seconds later by Marc Zanette, and getting a two-goal lead back again, making it 3-1 Niagara. The quick goals kept coming; just 39 seconds later, Weisman got his second goal of the game to cut Niagara's lead to 3-2.

At 2:26 of the third period, Iuorio scored his second goal and tallied his third point of the game, making it 4-2 Niagara. Iuorio's second goal put the game away for the Purple Eagles.

Giancarlo was the star of the game with two goals and an assist.

With the win over Canisius Thursday night, Niagara swept the Griffs (also winning 4-1 on Feb. 14).

Niagara hosts RIT next weekend to finish out the season.
