Obit -- Dorothy Gunn Bascomb

Dorothy Gunn Bascomb entered into rest Friday, April 29, 2011. She was born June 9, 1913, in Salamanca and moved to Grand Island in 1951.

Bascomb worked as the librarian at Sidway Elementary School before taking a position at Buffalo State University's special education library. She was very active in the Grand Island community. She was a past president of the Huth Road Elementary Parent Teachers Associations, First Director of the Grand Island Golden Age Club, and an active member in the Grand Island Garden Club and the Historical Society.

She also loved painting and writing.

Dorothy was the wife of the late Lawrence Arthur Bascomb and she will be interred in Salamanca with her late husband. She was mother to Betty Lee Bascomb Dickey, Arthur Lawrence Bascomb and the late Robert Charles Bascomb; grandmother to Caroline M. Dickey, Christine M. Dickey, Ame' Bascomb, Laura Bascomb-Werth and Jacklyn Bascomb; and great-grandmother to Gabriel E. Hawthorne Dickey and Isobel Camille Bascomb Werth. 

Dorothy lived with her daughter, Betty, in Dansville, N.Y., where she became active with the local creative writing group. Betty provided Dorothy with both love and care for many years.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 9, at 5 p.m. at the Kaiser Funeral Home. (This day would have been Dorothy's 98th birthday.) The Rev. Earle King will officiate.
