Deadline for nominations for the 2010 Andrew John Zuccari Memorial Scholarship award of $1,000 for a graduating Niagara-Wheatfield High School senior is May 1.

The scholarship is given on the basis of several criteria, including kindness, compassion, willingness to help and a sense of humor that is used to enrich the lives of others. It is offered in memory of Andrew Zuccari, a Niagara-Wheatfield student who was killed in 1995 by a drunk driver on the street in front of his Bergholz home.

"Andy never got to go to high school, because he was killed two weeks before he would have started, but we know he would be happy to know we're helping students there to go on to college or institutions of higher learning. He was a great kid, and nominees all have the same character qualities we treasured in him," said Luanne Zuccari, Andy's mother and member of the selection committee. "The scholarship is not exactly designed based on academic excellence or even financial need, although those students can certainly qualify. We're looking for an all around student who is a good kid, with a kind heart, and we have been so lucky over these years to meet so many who qualify through this scholarship program."

Nomination forms are available in the Niagara-Wheatfield High School Guidance Office or by calling 731-9993.
