The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement celebrates Friday, Feb. 2, as National Wear Red Day to raise awareness that heart disease is women’s No. 1 killer.

The American Heart Association and Jacobs Institute will host “STEM Goes Red,” an inspiring and interactive educational program designed to encourage young women to pursue rewarding careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Events for local high school students will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Jacobs Institute, 875 Ellicott St. (fifth floor), Buffalo. There will be a “Women in STEM” panel from 9-10 a.m.; and biomedical activities from 10:10-11:10 a.m. and 12:10-1:10 p.m.

Despite accounting for more than half of the college-educated workforce, women, especially women of color, make up a small share of scientists and engineers. Women continue to be underrepresented – and underfunded – in both research and STEM fields.

On National Wear Red Day, the American Heart Association encourages everyone to wear red to help raise awareness that heart disease is women’s No. 1 killer.
