UPDATE on NT travel ban

City of North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tyler provided this update: The travel ban will be lifted tonight at 8 p.m. The travel advisory will remain in effect until noon tomorrow, Jan. 18.

He said, “Thanks to the cooperation of vehicles staying off our roads this afternoon/evening, the DPW was able to swiftly clear roads, allowing the city to lift the travel ban.”

With the travel advisory still in place, Tylec added, “We ask residents to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel.”

Tylec said, “This winter storm has been incredibly difficult to predict throughout the region but, as weather conditions change, our decisions change. Travel bans are an unavoidable inconvenience, but they are a proactive measure to ensure public safety.

“The DPW will continue to clear streets for tomorrow, and we will be watching the ongoing weather changes. Please continue to check-in on your neighbors and help them where you can.

“My office will continue to provide updates as necessary.

“Thank you for your patience as we work to minimize any inconvenience.”

Mayor Austin Tylec announced a state of emergency has been declared in the City of North Tonawanda, effective 2:30 p.m. He said this action “has been declared to respond effectively to winter storm conditions that threatens the public safety of the citizens of North Tonawanda.”

This State of Emergency and Travel Ban will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday, at which time it may be extended or reevaluated if weather conditions persist.

Tylec said, “As mayor of the City of North Tonawanda, New York, I have exercised the authority granted to me under New York State Executive Law Article 2-B to preserve the public safety, and hereby render all required and available assistance vital to the security, well-being and health of the citizens of this municipality.

“I hereby direct all departments and agencies of the City of North Tonawanda, New York, to take whatever steps necessary to protect life, property and public infrastructure, and provide such emergency assistance deemed necessary.”
