Catholic Health names Dr. Basem Goueli director of hematology & medical oncology

Basem S. Goueli, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., has been named director of hematology and medical oncology at Catholic Health.

A press release stated, “Having directed three independent cancer institutes, representing 17 hospitals and 12 cancer centers, Dr. Goueli brings a wealth of experience to Catholic Health. He has been the principal investigator in nearly 100 clinical trials involving breast cancer, myeloma, prostate cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, ovarian cancer, head and neck cancer, and esophageal cancer, among others. His work has appeared in leading medical publications, including The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet.”

“Dr. Goueli is a nationally recognized expert in hematology and medical oncology, and we are fortunate to have him as part of our medical team,” said Hans Cassagnol, M.D., M.M.M., Catholic Health EVP and chief clinical officer/chief physician executive. “His approach to cancer care mirrors our commitment to provide patients with the high-quality, compassionate care and personalized service Catholic Health is known for.”

Serving as national medical director for two XBiotech trials and a consultant to numerous pharmaceutical and precision medicine companies, Goueli has a knowledge of the latest cancer therapies.

“I pledge to bring a level of care and personalized service to Catholic Health that will help cancer patients achieve the best possible outcomes,” said Goueli, who trained at the Mayo Clinic, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “I want my patients to know they will have unparalleled access to their care team, not only when they are doing well, but when they need us most.”

Goueli received his medical degree and Ph.D. from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He completed his internal medicine residency at George Washington University Hospital and National Institute of Health, and a hematology/oncology fellowship and biochemistry post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University. He earned his MBA from at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received several professional certifications from MIT.

A national speaker, educator and specialist in hematology and medical oncology, Goueli is the founder of Revolution Cancer, CancerLight, and Cancer Clarity, which will launch in 2024.
