Next week, Wednesday, Jan. 10, is National Take the Stairs Day, and the American Lung Association in Buffalo has teamed up with Independent Health to challenge people to take the stairs for clean air and healthy lungs. Together, the organizations are hosting a stair climbing event at Seneca One Tower from 4:30-6:30 p.m., which will coincide with the happy hour “Flights” fundraiser happening at Other Half Brewing from 5-7 p.m. Both practice climb and happy hour funds will go to supporting the official “Fight For Air Climb” in March. No registration is required. Visit the Facebook event for more information.

National Take the Stairs Day is an annual observance on the second Wednesday of January that gives Americans an opportunity to adopt healthy routines like taking the stairs. Stair climbing is a great way to burn calories, but is also a simple way to improve your overall health.

“Many people make resolutions to adopt healthier habits in the new year, so National Take the Stairs Day is a fantastic way to kick off those goals as well as exercise your lungs!” said Kaelyn Gates, senior director for the Lung Association. “We would also like to invite Buffalo residents to take it a step further and join us for our ‘Fight For Air Climb’ at Seneca One Tower on March 23 of this year!”

“Independent Health is a longtime partner to the American Lung Association and the ‘Fight For Air Climb’ Buffalo,” said Pat Clabeaux, executive vice president, chief human resources officer. “We are excited to get the community excited and training a little earlier this year during National Take the Stairs Day. It’s a great way to kick off the year and get in the right mind set to take on Seneca One Tower in March.”

During the “Fight For Air Climb” Buffalo on March 23, participants will climb 691 stairs at Seneca One Tower. Joining the “Fight For Air Climb” supports the work of the Lung Association to defeat lung cancer, champion clean air for all, improve the quality of life for those living with lung disease and their families, and create a tobacco-free future. Hundreds of local residents – including over 200 local firefighters and competing local fire departments who will practice with over 50 pounds of firefighting gear on – come together for this fun and exciting event!
