Niagara County Office of the Aging Director Darlene DiCarlo announced the county’s Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) will host a series of community meetings for seniors to answer their health insurance questions. HIICAP offers free, unbiased, confidential assistance on health insurance, with information and counseling provided by professionally trained staff and volunteers.

“There are many choices for seniors, there can be program changes from year to year, and, quite frankly, it can get overwhelmingly very quickly,” DiCarlo said. “Our goal for HIICAP is to put out all the available information and answer questions so people can make informed decisions.”

According to DiCarlo, HIICAP can help with Medicare eligibility; Medicaid eligibility; comparison information of Medicare supplemental insurance options; Medicare Advantage options; eligibility for programs that help with the costs of Medicare; prescription drug coverage including Medicare Part D and NYS EPIC; long-term care planning and insurance; Medicare preventive and health screening benefits; and comparing employee or retiree insurance with Medicare insurance options.

“The Medicare open enrollment period begins Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7,” DiCarlo said. “So, these community meetings are at the opportune time.”
