Niagara County Legislator Will Collins announced registration is open for the county’s next household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, in Lockport. The event is open to all Niagara County residents, but one must register in advance.

Collins said the event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lockport Town Hall located at 6560 Dysinger Toad. Registration can be done by going to www.rethinkyourwaste.com/events and scrolling down to the Lockport event. There is also a list of items that will be accepted for recycling posted to that website, including latex paint, which is a recent addition.

“As summer winds down, this is a great opportunity to recycle leftover paints, pesticides, pool chemicals and other items left in your garage or basement before packing everything up for winter,” Collins said.

Niagara County Environmental Coordinator Dawn Timm said that, in the 10-plus years the HHW program has been operating, close to 1 million pounds of harmful products have been removed from Niagara County homes.

“People have really embraced the events we run throughout the spring, summer and fall as our attendance has never been higher,” she said. “We have one event after this in North Tonawanda and are already planning our calendar for 2024.”
