Longtime Islander and porcelain artist Chie Doring celebrated her 96th birthday on Sept. 8, a day after her actual birthday, bolstered with the happy company of her husband, Floyd, and their friends at Moose Lodge 180, 2524 Grand Island Blvd.

Friend Mary Ehde arranged the festivities and brought in a handmade ice cream cake from Adrian’s Custard & Beef, just down the street from the Moose Lodge, at 2352 Grand Island Boulevard. There were flowers, cards and a whole group singing “Happy Birthday.”

In 2021, Chie’s friends at the Moose surprised her with a big party for her 94th. This time, Chie had time to prepare. She smiled and enjoyed the late-afternoon party as she opened her gifts. She wore an outfit that included a beautiful red print blouse, even though her favorite color is purple. She commented that she loves all colors because she is an artist.

Chie and Floyd met in Japan while she was a registered nurse at a military hospital in Sapporo and he was a medic in the U.S. Air Force. They married in 1958 and moved to Grand Island a couple of years later. Her porcelain art graces their home and has won her state and national awards. She also has been honored as a past Citizen of the Year by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and Erie County. (Photos by Karen Carr Keefe)
