'Save Labor Day for Youngstown!'

It’s Labor Day weekend, a time to enjoy an annual tradition in Youngstown. The village’s Labor Day Parade will take over the Main Street strip starting at noon Monday Sept. 4.

Presented by the Village of Youngstown with local businesses, this family event will again pay tribute to the traditions of organized labor, with marching bands, floats, youth groups, police and fire responders, elected officials and union celebrations.

Cathy Pasquantino of The Village Diner advised, “Come early for a good spot and music on street.”

Visitors are also welcome to check out a number of activities, including the ongoing 200th anniversary celebration of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, located at Main and Church streets. Members will hold a chicken chowder sale throughout the day on the parish grounds.

“Stop at the Presbyterian Church where you can purchase good, old-fashioned ‘firemen’s’ chowder. There will also be organized yard games for the children,” program chairperson Sue Martinez said.

A number of local shops will be open, with sales of food, drink and some unique items that are strictly Youngstown. But that’s not all. The Ontario House (Jug) at Main and Lockport streets will hold a “Spirit of the ‘80s” concert with Men Without Hats on the backyard stage.

“We are planning a wonderful event as we ‘Save Labor Day for Youngtown.’ Enjoy the parade,” Mayor Rob Reisman said.
