The south end of the Island now has its own Dollar General, at 1853 Love Road.

This new Dollar General is located in Grandyle Village, near Kaegebein Elementary School and South State Parkway. The store currently employs nine people and is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Regular checkout or self-checkout is available for customers.

According to an Aug. 14 press release, the store, which opened Aug. 3, “provides area residents with an affordable and convenient store location to purchase household essentials, including food, cleaning supplies, paper products, over-the-counter medicines, hygiene products, baby items and more through its mission of serving others. There also are sections for school supplies, toys and clothing.”

In addition to the national and private branded products Dollar General carries, the new Grand Island location “includes the company’s new stylish, on-trend home décor and an expanded party preparation selection,” the press release said.

Customer Chris Roberts of Grand Island was pleased with the new store and its merchandise.

“I told my wife this is the nicest Dollar General I’ve been in,” he said.

Brothers Dominic and Michael Leone, students at Grand Island High School, liked the fact the store is close to home. They found what they were looking for: aluminum pans for cooking dinner.

“At Dollar General, we believe the addition of each new store provides positive economic growth for the communities we proudly serve, and the addition of our new Grand Island store highlights our commitment to deliver a pleasant shopping experience that includes great prices on quality products in a convenient location,” said Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “We look forward to welcoming customers to our new store and hope they will enjoy shopping at our new location.”

There is another Dollar General in the center of the Island, at 2391 Grand Island Blvd., near M&T Bank.

As part of Dollar General’s mission to the community, the new store will be donating 100 new books to a nearby elementary school to commemorate the store opening, the company said.

The book donation will benefit students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. In partnership with the Kellogg Co., the donation will be part of a planned donation of more than 60,000 books in fiscal 2023 across the country to celebrate new DG store openings.

“DG strives to be a good neighbor and is committed to the communities it proudly calls home, evidenced by unwavering support of literacy and education initiatives through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation,” the press release said.

“The addition of the Grand Island store opens the opportunity for schools, nonprofit organizations and libraries within a 15-mile radius of the store to apply for Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants.”

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $233 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 19.3 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education, according to the company.

Dollar General plans to create new jobs in the Grand Island community as the store is expected to employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on the individual needs of the store. The company said it “provides employees with competitive wages, world-class and award-winning training and development programs, and benefits including day-one telemedicine eligibility as well as health insurance coverage options, 401K savings and retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, paid parental leave and adoption assistance to eligible employees. Interested candidates can review and apply for available positions at https://careers.dollargeneral.com/.
