Kavinoky Theatre commences 44th season with four performances

D’Youville University has announced the appointment of Katie Mallinson as the Executive Director for the Kavinoky Theatre. This new role comes in addition to her current position as the university’s program director for the Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Theater Arts – the first acting and performance MFA in Western New York. In tandem, Kavinoky Theatre has announced the start of its 44th season beginning on Sept. 8, with four performances planned through June 16, 2024.

“We are delighted to have Katie Mallinson lead the Kavinoky Theatre into a successful and entertaining future,” said D’Youville University President Lorrie Clemo, Ph.D. “Not only is the Kavinoky Theatre a cultural jewel for the westside community, but also a performing arts anchor in the City of Buffalo. The vision and talent that Katie Mallinson showcases as an artistic leader is well known, and I am confident that these traits will certainly advance the already stellar performances offered within the theater.”

A press release stated, “In her combined role, Mallinson will provide executive leadership that oversees all facets of the Kavinoky Theatre, as well as educate MFA D’Youville students on becoming professional artists of the future. Mallinson offers an artistic and educational approach that is rooted in dramaturgical values to develop identity, artistry and collaboration – all with the intent of developing community through storytelling.”

Mallinson is a Buffalo native and alumna of Niagara University’s theater program with an MFA in dramaturgy from the Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University. She has worked at theaters throughout Western New York, including Shea’s Performing Arts Center, Road Less Traveled Productions, The Jewish Repertory Theatre, and The Kavinoky Theatre.

“I am honored to take on this new responsibility with the D’Youville University Kavinoky Theatre,” Mallinson said. “I believe that art is fundamental to personal, social, economic and civic health. The Kavinoky is a theatrical cornerstone in Western New York with a treasured history of creating memorable, moving experiences for audiences. I’m excited to continue this tradition and, with the integration of the university’s MFA program, evolve programming through dynamic distinctive storytelling that expands our creative community to ensure a bright future for the industry.”

The press release stated, “D'Youville University Kavinoky’s 44th season includes four fresh and fun takes on performance with ‘What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidy Schreck,’ ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ by Richard O’Brien, ‘Gutenberg! The Musical!’ by Anthony King & Scott Brown, and ‘The Legend of Georgia McBride’ by Matthew López. In addition to the regular season, Mike Randall brings his one-man show, ‘Charles Dickens Presents: A Christmas Carol,’ to the stage in December for a special engagement. Tickets are available now at kavinokytheatre.com.”

Clemo said, “The D’Youville University Kavinoky Theatre has had a rich history since first welcoming patrons in 1980. Our commitment to providing evocative and thought-provoking live theater that is inclusive and accessible to all remains the mission of the theater. A common phrase in show business is that ‘The show must go on,’ and I am certain that, with Katie Mallinson as the executive director for the Kavinoky Theatre, the show will not only go on but will also thrive.”

The press release stated, “Leveraged by the Kavinoky Theatre, the D’Youville University dramatic arts program provides innovative artistic education where professionals, students and audiences interface in dynamic, integrative experiences. Together, professionals and emerging artists provide artistic experiences to the Western New York Community.”
