The Niagara University Student Veterans Organization raised more than $1,500 during its fourth annual Memorial Day Disc Golf Tournament, which was held May 30 at the Beaver Island State Park Golf Course.

Forty players participated in the tournament.

The proceeds bring the total raised from the event since it was established in 2013 to over $10,000. All funds benefit the CSM Fred Kirtchen, '80 Memorial Veterans Scholarship, which assists returning military veterans who are attending NU. With another contribution from the organization forthcoming, the scholarship will soon meet the threshold to be fully endowed.

Sgt. Maj. Kirtchen graduated from Niagara University in 1980 while assigned as an instructor in the department of military science. During his military career, he was decorated for valor in Vietnam and rose to the highest levels of responsibility in the Army. A proud Niagaran, Kirtchen continued his education after retiring from the army and maintained a close relationship with military alumni. In 2010, he was posthumously inducted into Niagara University's Military and ROTC Hall of Fame.
