Tesla at Niagara Museum receives nonprofit status

Fri, Aug 28th 2015 12:10 pm

Tesla at Niagara Museum has received notice from the IRS that it has been granted tax-exempt status as a nonprofit. The group received a charter from the New York Department of Education in January.

Joan Johnson, president of Tesla at Niagara Museum, announced the news at its board of directors meeting Aug. 19.

The board can now begin negotiations with the owner of the former Edward Dean Adams Transformer House for use as a permanent museum. The building, on Buffalo Avenue, will highlight the achievements of Nikola Tesla, inventor of alternating current, and the first use of AC at the Niagara Falls Power Co. plant for long-distance transmission of electrical power from Niagara Falls to Buffalo. The history of the Niagara Falls Power Company and the subsequent development of the electrochemical industries will also be a focus of the museum in the building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Achieving the nonprofit status allows the group to apply for numerous grants and to accept tax-exempt donations from the public.
