Mark Kelso headlines youth football symposium

Former Buffalo Bill Mark Kelso and the Niagara Erie Youth Sports Association will host a youth football symposium at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at LaSalle Preparatory, 7436 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls.

The goal of the free event is to explain and demonstrate USA Football's initiatives to make youth football a safer and meaningful experience for all participants.

The event will introduce the efforts of the NFL, USA Football and NEYSA to implement the USA Football "HeadsUp" initiatives to every youth football organizations and to educate parents, players and coaches in those protocols, which include proper equipment (helmet and shoulder pads) fitting; concussion awareness; proper "HeadsUp" tackling and blocking techniques; heat preparedness and hydration; and, new this year, information about sudden cardiac arrest. In addition, there will be discussion regarding the new USA Football "National Practice Guidelines" that implement a recommended number of team practices and limit the amount of "full contact" drills to be done every week.

Parents and players will be informed about these objectives, after which all attendees will participate in hands on drills, designed by USA Football, to teach them the "HeadsUp" tackling and blocking techniques, which will be overseen by USA Football Player Safety Coaches and "HeadsUp" certified coaches representing each attending member organization of NEYSA.
