The focus will be on prevention when Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center holds "Time Lost is Brain Lost - Preventing and Treating Stroke," its sixth annual National Stroke Awareness Month health fair, from 2-5 p.m. May 14 in the Medical Center Auditorium.
Sponsored by the Memorial Medical Center radiology department, the free event will feature presentations by yoga instructor Katie Canterbury and certified life coach Shawn Marie Cichowski, along with health screenings and interactive displays.
Memorial Stroke Center Medical Director Nyathappa Anand, M.D., will speak on the topic "Time is Brain: Prevention and Treatment of Stroke" at 4 p.m.
A 2012 study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery
and Psychiatry found strokes are more common among those with stressful lives
and high-strung personalities.
A self-care stress reduction
trainer, meditation and mindfulness instructor and Reiki practitioner,
Cichowski developed the WNY Life Coaching
Center as a means to help others enjoy life and find well-being. Inspired by
great sports coaches, she applies a philosophy and
coach's mindset to help others develop what will be best for
them by drawing out inner wisdom and potential.
Joining Memorial Medical Center staff members will be representatives from Niagara Hospice, Rural/Metro Medical Services, Health Systems Services, Amedysis Home Health Services and Venture Forthe Personalized Home Care Services.
