Bradt urges meeting on buildings

On Monday, Niagara County Legislator Randy R. Bradt of North Tonawanda called on Legislature Chairman William L. Ross of Wheatfield to convene a second special meeting in a month to approve the purchase of a trio of downtown Lockport buildings by the county to avoid paying several days' rent on the facilities.

Bradt, an accountant by trade, reviewed sale documents late last week and discovered that under the current timetable, county taxpayers would be liable for an additional $12,000 to $15,000 - figures he verified with County Treasurer Kyle D. Andrews that morning.

County lawmakers met March 19 to bid on the properties in a rare special meeting. Bradt noted that, as the final purchase of the buildings came about through the process of negotiations, county lawmakers still needed to ratify the deal.

By issuing approval no later than April 17, county government would be able to wire the necessary payments to close on the properties, located at 111 Main St., 50 Main St. and 20-40 East Ave.

"Allowing $12,000 or $15,000 of taxpayers' earnings to be spent needlessly isn't why I sought this office," Bradt said. "As an accountant, I look for savings for my clients no matter how big or small. We should approach county spending the same way."
