Fire Chief Matt Osinski reported that Grand Island Firefighters responding to fire emergencies can be severely handicapped by heavy snowfalls, which have recently buried many local hydrants. He pointed out that the extra time required to locate and dig out theses "missing" hydrants can hamper firefighting operations and contributes to an increased property loss or, even worse, a fire-related fatality.
Osinski urges residents to clear snow accumulations away from nearby hydrants so that firefighters have ready access to a water supply if needed. Business owners are also urged to use common sense in clearing adjacent parking areas so as not to bury and/or isolate hydrants, thereby compromising their fire protection.
Grand Island fire cadets, Boy Scouts, and others have again been asked to continue hydrant clearing efforts this winter, and everyone's helping hands will be greatly appreciated by all your GIFC "volunteers."
