A new master's program in health care administration is the latest addition to Niagara University's repertoire of advanced degree options.

The MHA program, offered through NU's AACSB-accredited College of Business Administration, will provide the skills and knowledge to aid students desiring to work as administrators in traditional health care settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes and physician practices, as well as health care suppliers and consultants.

The program requires completion of 14 graduate-level courses (42 credits). In addition to coursework and a practicum, students must complete 24 hours of service with a community health organization, reflecting Niagara University's Vincentian mission.

Applications are being accepted immediately, with classes slated to begin in fall 2015.

The program's establishment comes as the Affordable Care Act is forecasted to greatly increase the need for both clinical and administrative health care personnel. With many more of the nation's estimated 49 million uninsured now eligible for health insurance, the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook states the projected growth rate for medical and health services managers is 22 percent.

A multidisciplinary approach will be taken to achieve the program's objectives, with resources and courses being provided through NU's College of Arts and Sciences and department of nursing.

"Students enrolling in the MHA program at Niagara University are going to have an outstanding opportunity to learn from accomplished faculty members in business, nursing and the natural sciences," said Dr. Kristine Principe, program director. "When you combine the resources of a fully accredited business school with a state-of-the-art integrated science facility and burgeoning nursing programs, MHA students will be able to learn the many aspects of health care beyond clinical practice."

Students will study numerous topics related to the health care industry that include community wellness, health-related data analysis, health care public policy and organizational management issues in health care institutions.

The program is consistent with the Vincentian mission of Niagara University, which emphasizes service to others, especially the poor and oppressed. By educating health care professionals, the university will enable its students to better serve patients in their local communities.

Niagara University will continue to offer a health care administration concentration through its MBA program, which is ranked among the best in the world by CEO Magazine.

NU presently offers 29 advanced degree and certificate programs.
