NFHA's environmental leadership program has spots available for local youth

Local children are invited to enjoy an outdoor experience that includes kayaking and exploring Niagara's waterways

The Niagara Falls Housing Authority invites children ages 12 and older to participate in its annual "Adventures in Environmental Leadership" program. This unique learning experience provides students with the opportunity to explore local waterways while learning about science and the environment. The two-day program debuted in 2013 and was a successful collaboration between the Niagara Falls Housing Authority, Honeywell and Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper. 

"It's interesting to learn about how the water can be affected by what happens on land," said Niagara Falls High School student Christa Fiori. 

Christa is one of 60 students who participated in the engaging Honeywell "Adventures in Environmental Leadership" summer program last year.

The 2014 two-day summer program is free and open to all youth 12 years and older. The two sessions are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 2 pm. Aug. 11-12 and Aug. 13-14. The closing ceremony will be held Aug. 15.

Space is limited to 60; there are a few spots left for children who would like to participate. The program is open to youth who live in the Niagara Falls Housing Authority as well as children from the Niagara Falls community as a whole.

Applications are available at all Niagara Falls Housing Authority community developments, the Doris W. Jones Family Resource Building, and Packard Court Community Center, or by calling the Doris W. Jones Family Resource Building at 716-285-5374. Applicants will receive notification of acceptance shortly thereafter.

"The program opened up a whole new world to our youth and, at the same time, provided an interesting way to integrate exercise in their schedule and expand their knowledge about the importance of our beautiful landscape and waterways."

The Niagara Falls Housing Authority operates affordable housing in the City of Niagara Falls. In existence for more than 70 years, the NFHA is responsible for more than 900 affordable housing opportunities. Its communities include Packard Court, Beloved Community, Harry S. Jordan Gardens, Anthony Spallino Towers and Henry E. Wrobel Towers.
