Remember the old Starlite drive-in movie on Military Road? The Town of Niagara can't bring back the joys of sitting in or on the hood of your car to watch the latest movies in the summertime in what is now Wegmans Plaza.

However, local residents can bring the family and spread a blanket or bring a lawn chair to Veterans Park on Lockport Road (across from Town Hall) this summer to watch outdoor movies on a giant screen.

The movies begin at dusk outside the Calvin K. Richards Senior/Youth Activity Center on Thursdays, starting this week and running through Aug. 7. Admission is free and refreshments will be available for sale at the community center.

Movies include: "Frozen" on July 17, "Epic" on July 24, "Rio 2" on July 31, and "Turbo" on Aug. 7.

The movies are new this year, but the town also is bringing back its Music Mania Mondays concerts to the park.

Concerts from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. include Monday, July 14, the A List Band; Monday, July 21, 90 West; and Monday, July 28, Rip and the Bandogs.

The final concert, featuring Kathy Lynn and the Playboys at 5:30 p.m., will be part of the annual concert and car show from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4.

Tuesday nights are car cruise nights starting at 5 p.m. until Aug. 4, and include food and music.

•There also will be some free music in Wheatfield this summer, most notably at the Wheatfield Family Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 24, at Fairmount Park. The picnic will start a 10:45 a.m. with the raising of the flag. For a list of events, go to www.wheatfieldfamilypicnic.com. Music will be provided by Bout Time, the Bergholz German Band and Sterling Sound.

•Free music also will be available at Olde Sanborn Days this weekend, the Western New York Fireman's Association at St. Johnsburg firehall in Wheatfield on July 23 to 26, and at the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum's Farm Festival on July 26 and 27.

•Many nearby Niagara County towns and cities and villages, including Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda, Lewiston, Youngstown, Cambria and Newfane, also are featuring free concerts. Check their websites for more information.

Also don't miss the Lewiston Council on the Arts free concerts. Go online at www.artcouncil.org for a complete listing.
