Flanagan, Nguyen, Chiampou named to Niagara University board of trustees

The Rev. Patrick Flanagan, C.M., Ph.D., Class of 1987; the Rev. Michael M. Nguyen, C.M.; and Charles W. Chiampou, C.P.A., J.D., '76, were named to the board of trustees at Niagara University. The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of the university, announced their elections.

Flanagan is an assistant professor in the department of theology and religious studies at St. John's University, while Nguyen is rector of the Miraculous Medal House (Vincentian College Seminary) in Jamaica, N.Y. Chiampou is a partner with Chiampou Travis Besaw & Kershner in Amherst.

"We are very honored that these three gentlemen will be serving Niagara University as trustees," Maher said. "Each of these men brings a very high level of experience, knowledge and professionalism to Niagara, and they will each be a great asset to the university. We look forward to working with them over the coming years to further Niagara's commitment to academic excellence and service to the community in Western New York and around the world."

Rev. Patrick Flanagan

Flanagan graduated magna cum laude from Niagara University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in biology education, and went on to earn a master of divinity from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception (Huntington) and a Ph.D. in theological ethics from Loyola University of Chicago. His doctoral dissertation was titled "Calling the Sleeper to Awake: The Common Good as an Ethic of Information Technology."

Flanagan has been affiliated with St. John's since 2003 as an adjunct faculty member, visiting professor and assistant professor, his current position. His teaching and research interests include distance learning, information technology ethics, marketplace morality and Catholic social teaching.

From 1994-98, Flanagan was an adjunct faculty member at Niagara University, teaching courses in religious studies.

In addition to St. John's and Niagara, Flanagan has served in faculty positions at All Hallows College (Dublin), the College of St. Elizabeth (Convent Station, N.J.), Seton Hall University (South Orange, N.J.), Merion Mercy Academy (Merion Station, Pa.) and St. Joseph Preparatory Seminary (Princeton, N.J.).

Flanagan pronounced his vows to the Vincentian community in April 1991 and was ordained to the priesthood June 6, 1992. For the Congregation of the Mission, Flanagan was the on-campus Vincentian community's treasurer during his tenure at Niagara. He performed the same role for the Vincentian Formation Community in Jamaica from 2007-09, and presently serves as religious superior of the Vincentians at St. John's.

Flanagan is affiliated with many organizations, including the American Academy of Religion, the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, the Catholic Theology Society of America, the College Theology Society, the Society for the History of Technology, the Society for Philosophy and Technology, the Society of Business Ethics, and the Society of Christian Ethics.

Rev. Michael M. Nguyen

Nguyen was born in Vietnam and arrived in the U.S. as a refugee. He attained a B.S. in accounting from St. John's University in 1990 and later added master's degrees in divinity (1995) and theology (1998), both from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception. He is currently pursuing a license in canonical law from the Catholic University of America (Washington, D.C.).

Nguyen commenced his tenure at the Miraculous Medal House when he was named formation director in 2012. He was chosen as rector in July 2013.

Since 2009, Nguyen has also served as a provincial consulter with the Eastern Province of the Congregation of the Mission. From 2009-12, he was the Vincentian community's superior in Greensboro, N.C.

Nguyen joined St. Mary's Catholic Church (Greensboro) in 1995 as an assistant pastor, and was named pastor in 2003, a position he served in until 2012.

Since 2009, Nguyen has been a trustee for the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal and the Congregation of the Mission of St. Vincent de Paul in Germantown. He is presently a member of the Vietnamese Catholic Federation in the USA, and previously served on the board of trustees of the Faith Action International House in Greensboro for seven years.

In 2010, the Diocese of Charlotte presented Nguyen with its Recognition Award for the Commitment of Time, Support and Inspiration to the Endeavors of the African American Affairs Ministry.

Charles W. Chiampou

Chiampou earned his bachelor of business administration from Niagara University in 1976, and he later earned his juris doctor from New York Law School.

Chiampou is a partner with Chiampou Travis Besaw & Kershner, specializing in tax services for major closely held corporations and high-net-worth individuals in the Western New York area. His clients include companies in the insurance, retail, food, real estate, lumber and manufacturing industries.

In addition to his professional work, Chiampou is very active in community organizations and has served on the boards of Catholic Charities, Nardin Academy and Goodwill, demonstrating an abiding commitment to the Western New York community. He is also a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Erie County Bar Association and the Estate Analysts of Western New York.
