Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for Jan. 31, 2014

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 144 calls from Jan. 18 to 24. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to seven burglary false alarm calls and seven fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, Jan. 18

•Blackmon Road, residential fire - Deputies assisted the Grand Island Fire Co. for a report of an oven fire.

•Bedell Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked in Veterans Park near a maintenance building during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the vehicle and spoke to the occupants. The subjects had been using the headlights to light up a late-evening hockey game and the battery died.

Sunday, Jan. 19

•Baseline Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

Monday, Jan. 20

•Jenell Drive, animal loose - A complainant stated that a dog was running loose in the neighborhood. The dog control officer was notified.

•Jan. 20 East River Road, fraud - A complainant stated that he lost his credit card and an unknown person or persons made fraudulent charges.

•Jan. 20 Long Road, deer struck - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident involving a deer. No injuries were reported.

Tuesday, Jan. 21

•Love Road, suspicious person - Deputies observed a male subject walking back and forth in front of a restaurant during the late hours of the night after the business closed. The subject was collecting discarded cigarettes for his own personal use. The subject was advised and left without incident.

•Whitehaven Road, warrant arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 29-year-old man from Grand Island after a check showed he had an outstanding bench warrant issued from the City of Tonawanda. The man was transferred to the custody of the City of Tonawanda Police Department.

•Stony Point Road, narcotics arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 27-year-old woman for criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree (a class A misdemeanor) and several traffic infractions. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Orchard Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.

Wednesday, Jan. 22

•Alt Boulevard, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.

•East River Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole a lawn ornament from his yard.

•Baseline Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Baseline Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was in the roadway for several hours with the four-way flashers on. Deputies checked and confirmed the vehicle to be the one that had broken down in the above narrative.

Thursday, Jan. 23

•Lang Boulevard, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call at a local business. Deputies checked and determined the call to be accidental.

•Ransom Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Staley Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

Friday, Jan. 24

•Melrose Road, residential fire - Deputies assisted the Grand Island Fire Co. for a report of a structure fire. The Erie County Sheriff's Arson Investigation Unit was also dispatched to the scene at the request of the fire company.

•Sixth Street, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that she thought she heard an intruder in her residence. Deputies searched the house and found no persons inside.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property found - A complainant stated she found a wallet on the ground at a business. The wallet was turned over to patrol.

•East River Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.

•Grand Island Boulevard, welfare check - A complainant stated that while she was driving she observed a male subject walking down the road in a light jacket and pair of shorts. The complainant was concerned due to the frigid temperatures and stopped to give the subject a pair of gloves but still wanted patrol to check. Deputies located the subject and assisted him to his destination.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Staley Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Marilyn Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated a younger male subject came to his door asking for a gas can during the late hours of the night. After the complainant stated he did not have one, the subject got back into a vehicle and left the area. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject or vehicle by the description given.

•South State Parkway, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.
