Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for July 12, 2013

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 212 calls from June 29 to July 5. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 20 burglary false alarm calls and 12 fire alarm during the dates of this report. Deputies also responded to 16 fireworks use complaints during the dates of this report at various locations on Grand Island. Two persons were arrested for unlawful possession of fireworks (a violation) and issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

Saturday, June 29

•Baseline Road, accident with injury - Deputies responded to a report of a bicyclist who had been struck by a motor vehicle. The bicyclist sustained seemingly not life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital. The driver of the vehicle was issued traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Stony Point Road, narcotics/warrant arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested 29-year-old Kristyn Dowd of Grand Island after a check of her license showed she had an outstanding bench warrant from the City of Buffalo. After searching Dowd's vehicle, deputies located a small amount of narcotics inside. Dowd was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance seventh degree (a class A misdemeanor), and criminally possessing a hypodermic Instrument (a class A misdemeanor). Dowd was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Revere Road, residential burglary - A complainant stated that a known individual entered her residence and stole various items while inside. Erie County sheriff's detectives' investigation led to the arrest of a juvenile offender for burglary in the second degree (a class C felony), criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree (a class A misdemeanor), and petit larceny (a class A misdemeanor). The juvenile offender was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending his arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Beaver Island State Park, suspicious person with vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked in Beaver Island State Park occupied by several individuals. The subjects were advised and left the park without incident.

•Bedell Road, endangering the welfare of a child - A complainant stated that two small children were walking about an apartment complex with no parent around. The deputy's investigation led to the arrest of a 30-year-old woman from Grand Island. She is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child (a class A misdemeanor) and was transported to the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $500 bail. The children were turned over to the custody of another family member.

•East River Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies spoke to the occupants and advised them.

Sunday, June 30

•Havenwood Lane, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked outside of a home that was still in the construction phase. Deputies located the vehicle and advised the driver.

•Town Hall Terrace, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Town Hall Terrace, youth activity - A complainant stated that children in the area were being very loud and seemed to be destroying some type of cardboard box. Deputies located the youths, who were playing, and advised them to keep the noise down.

•West River Road, fireworks use - A complainant stated that fireworks were being set off somewhere in the area. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

Monday, July 1

•Hidden Oak Court, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that two males were outside of her residence and were mowing her lawn. The complainant stated she did not hire anyone to perform such work. Deputies spoke to the males, who were working for a landscaping company and came to the wrong address.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a person had pitched a tent near the information center. Deputies spoke to the individuals, who stated they were hiking through the area.

•Cox Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent hours, an unknown person stole a bicycle from her property. Prior to the arrival of patrol, the complainant called back and stated that her daughter's friend had the bicycle and it was not stolen.

•Baseline Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a pickup truck was swerving in and out of traffic while travelling down the road. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

•Love Road, accident with injury - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. One driver was transported to a local area hospital with seemingly not life-threatening injuries.

Tuesday, July 2

•Bedell Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were being loud in the parking lot of his apartment complex during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the youths and advised them.

•Whitehaven Road, property found - Deputies located an electric shopping cart on the side of the road that belonged to Tops Friendly Markets. The cart was returned.

•Wallace Drive, residential fire - Deputies assisted Grand Island Fire Co. personnel with a report of an electrical fire. Damage was minimal and no injuries were reported.

•Alvin Road, larceny - Employees of an auto dealership stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole various items from the sales lot. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Love Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated he observed a male subject laying on top of his minivan roof and was unsure if the person was alive or dead. Deputies located the subject, who appeared in good health, and advised him.

•Long Road, deer struck - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident involving a deer. No injuries were reported.

Wednesday, July 3

•Havenwood Lane, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a yard of a nearby residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies advised the subjects to turn down the music.

•Adel Lane, loud music - A complainant stated that several people were outside of a residence and talking very loudly during the late hours of the night. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

•I-190, road obstruction - Deputies located a ladder in a lane of traffic on the I-190. The obstruction was removed.

•Alt Boulevard, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a male subject called her residence from a blocked telephone number and stated he was from technical services. The male said that the complainant's computer was not properly working, but when confronted with questions by the complainant, the subject hung up.

•Wallace Drive, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole the license plate from his motorcycle.

Thursday, July 4

•Staley Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that it appeared a door to a seemingly vacant house was open, and the complainant was unsure if anyone was inside. Deputies made contact with the homeowner of the residence, who reported no problems.

•Bedell Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a vehicle was parked on the grass at Veterans Park and a nearby container door was open. Deputies checked and determined the container door to be an oversight. The owner of the vehicle was contacted and the vehicle was moved.

•Baseline Road, parking violation - A complainant stated that several vehicles were parked illegally behind a local business and others in the front in the fire lane. Deputies issued three parking tickets.

•Carl Road, hit-and-run accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. Prior to patrol's arrival, one of the vehicles fled the scene. No injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.

•Colonial Drive West, accident pdo - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Baseline Road, loud music - A complainant stated that several people were outside of her residence screaming for several hours. Deputies located the subjects and advised them.

•Oakridge Drive, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby residence. Deputies located the residence and advised the occupants.

Friday, July 5

•West River Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that she went to the river overlook near Whitehaven Road and noticed a suspicious-looking male staring at her. The complainant became uncomfortable and left the area. The complainant then went to the river overlook near Fix Road and after several minutes the same male approached her and asked if her name was Amy. The complainant responded no and left the area to return home. The complainant described the male subject as in his 50s with dark hair and dark sunglasses. He drove a black-colored vehicle. The complainant had no further information to provide about the incident.
