Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for Aug. 17, 2012

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 195 calls from July 28 to Aug. 3. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 10 burglary false alarm calls during the dates of this report.

Saturday, July 28

•Wallace Drive, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that he was awakened by a loud noise and found that someone had thrown an object at his front door and broke it. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any subjects.

•East River Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that sometime during the night someone broke the windshield on his boat.

•Monica Road, larceny - A complainant stated that a family member had stolen items from her residence. Deputies' investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man from Grand Island for petit larceny (a class A misdemeanor), criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree (a class A misdemeanor) and criminally possessing a hypodermic instrument (a class A misdemeanor). The man was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Grand Island Boulevard, customer trouble - Employees at a business stated a customer was being disruptive while in the store. The subject left prior to patrol's arrival.

•Grand Island Boulevard, welfare check - Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call at an amusement park. Deputies located some youths who had dialed 911 as a joke. The youths were advised.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - A complainant stated that while he was in an amusement park someone broke into his vehicle and stole various items. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Fix Road, trespass - A complainant stated that two youths were going through yards and looking into car windows in the area. Deputies located the subjects, and charged them with trespass (a violation). One juvenile offender was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Town of Grand Island Court. The other juvenile was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Erie County Family Court.

•Lakeview Drive, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated a suspicious vehicle was parked in front of her house during the late evening hours. Deputies checked and located the owner, who was visiting friends in the neighborhood.

Sunday, July 29

•I-190 suspicious person - Deputies received a call of a suspicious person walking on the I-190 Thruway late at night. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Wallace Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated that four suspicious youths were walking in the neighborhood late at night. Deputies located the youths, who were walking home from a friend's house.

•Baseline Road, loud music - A complainant stated loud music was coming from somewhere in the neighborhood. Deputies located the source of the music from Grass Island in the middle of the Niagara River.

•Deerwood Lane, Steeg Road, Jamestown Road, Huth Road, East Park Road, Timberlink Drive, Cardinal Lane, larceny - Complainants stated that sometime during the night someone stole various items from their unlocked vehicles. Deputies were later notified by the Kenmore Police Department that they had a juvenile offender in custody with possibly stolen property from the address.

•Marilyn Drive, larceny - A complainant stated that sometime during recent days someone stole a bicycle from a front lawn. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•East River Road, larceny - Employees from a club stated that someone stole ice from an outside freezer while on the property.

•South State Parkway, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was headed the wrong way in the southbound lanes of the parkway. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

•Whitehaven Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that three subjects were walking around Trinity United Methodist Church late at night. Deputies located the subjects, who were awaiting the arrival of a friend to play basketball inside the church.

Monday, July 30

•Ransom Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of an individual who applied for a pistol permit.

•Grand Island Boulevard, burglary - Employees of a restaurant stated that during the recent days someone smashed the glass door of the restaurant and stole various items from inside. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•East River Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were swimming in the Niagara River underneath the South Grand Island Bridge. Deputies located the youths and advised them.

•Jenell Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a subject was parked in a vehicle on the street and threw two cans out of his window and then left. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

•Baseline Road, welfare check - A complainant stated that he was unable to contact his father for some time and was concerned for his welfare. Deputies were unable to make contact with the father.

•Stony Point Road, fight - Deputies responded to a report of two males fighting at an address on Stony Point Road. Deputies located the two subjects, who were having a verbal dispute over property. The subjects were advised.

•South State Parkway, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that he observed a vehicle driving that had young children jumping around in the back seat. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Tuesday, July 31

•Bedell Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated a woodchuck was wandering around in his yard and seemed sick. The dog control officer was notified.

•Greenway Road, wires down - Deputies responded to a report of a tree limb that had fallen on electrical wires. National Grid was notified.

•Baseline Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a three-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•East River Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were swimming in the Niagara River underneath the South Grand Island Bridge. Deputies located the youths and advised them.

•Broadway, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was driving slowly down the street. Deputies located the vehicle, whose driver had just finished a construction job in the area.

•Red Jacket Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a house in the neighborhood late at night. Deputies located the residence and advised the occupants.

Wednesday, Aug. 1

•Jeffrey Drive, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that a residence in the neighborhood was vandalized. Deputies located the residence and found flowerpots that had been smashed in the roadway.

•Blackmon Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were running up and down the street looking into cars. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the youths.

•Westwood Drive, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated a suspicious vehicle was parked in front of his residence. Deputies located the vehicle and spoke to the driver, who was working construction in the area.

•East River Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of an individual who applied for a pistol permit.

•Stony Point Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that they saw two subjects walking down the road possibly armed with long guns. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subjects.

•Grand Island Boulevard, hit-and-run accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. Prior to arrival of deputies, one motorist fled the scene. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the fleeing motorist. No injuries were reported.

•Town Hall Terrace, youth activity - A complainant stated that youths were knocking on her windows and running away. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the youths.

•West River Road, welfare check - A complainant stated that he was unable to contact his parents for some time and was concerned for their welfare. Deputies were able to contact the parents, and advised them to contact their son.

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had broken down.

Thursday Aug. 2

•Love Road, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a vehicle parked in the Kaegebein Elementary School parking lot late at night. Deputies were able to locate the owner, who was skateboarding in the area.

•Love Road, suspicious person - Deputies located a person walking during the late hours of the night. The subject stated he was walking to a friend's house.

•Huth Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked in the neighborhood. Deputies checked and learned that the vehicle's owner was working construction in the area.

•Stony Point Road, animal loose - A complainant stated a dog was running loose in the neighborhood. A neighbor was able to put a leash on the dog. The dog control officer was notified.

•Baseline Road, deer struck - A complainant stated a deer was struck by a vehicle and appeared to be injured. Deputies checked but were unable to locate the deer. No injuries were reported.

•Baseline Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were on the playground at Sidway School and appeared to be up to no good. Deputies located the youths and advised them. No damage was observed.

•River Oaks Drive, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was driving around in the neighborhood. Deputies located the vehicle and the driver who lived in the neighborhood. The driver was advised.

Friday, Aug. 3

•Jen Court, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a suspicious subject was walking through yards in the neighborhood. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Stony Point Road, suspicious person - Deputies located two individuals riding bicycles during the late hours of the night. Deputies' investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year-old and a 23-year-old man, both of Grand Island. The 24-year-old was found to have a valid bench warrant from the Town of Grand Island Court, while the 23-year-old was charged with criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument (a class A misdemeanor). Both subjects were transported to the Erie County Holding Center.

•Ward Park Road, larceny - A complainant stated that sometime during the night various items were stolen from the yard of his residence.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Pin Oak Circle, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that for the last couple days, a suspicious vehicle was seen driving slowly up and down the street. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.
