Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports a Niagara Falls man was seriously injured in a boating accident in the Niagara River Monday.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit responded to a personal injury boat accident on the East Niagara River involving two personal watercrafts. Two cousins, Terell Mack, 35, of Niagara Falls and John Smith, 39, of Amherst, were headed north on the East Niagara River in the area of the South Grand Island Bridge when the Seadoo operated by Mack made an abrupt turn in front of the Seadoo operated by Smith, causing a head-on collision. Mack owned both Seadoos.

Smith suffered no injuries but Terrell Mack was taken to Erie County Medical Center with serious head and chest injuries.  Smith was issued a summons for operating a personal watercraft without a safety certificate.

Both subjects were pulled from the water by a U.S. Border Patrol vessel. The City of Tonawanda Police assisted the Erie County Sheriff's Office.  The investigation is continuing.
