Both the Grand Island Board of Education and Grand Island Town Board want some more information about the prospect of allowing the Niagara Sunday Fliers to use school property on Staley Road.
In a joint board meeting held Monday at Grand Island High School, the fliers, who were represented by Joseph Macaluso and Paul Kolbe, explained their proposal to partner with the district in a program that would provide the club with access to former baseball fields on Staley Road to fly their radio-controlled model aircraft. The club would provide a educational program to students and access to aircraft.
In light of recent opposition to the proposal (July 20, Island Dispatch, Page 4), Board of Education President David Goris wants both board members to go on a field trip to the property on Staley Road to see and hear for themselves what impact the planes might create.
"It would be foolish on our part to stop this from going forward without really understanding the lie of the land" and the resident impact, Goris said.
Regarding a possible plane noise issue, Goris asked the club to "bring out the loudest one that you have."
Councilman Richard Crawford said other unanswered questions include what events the club may hold and what are the days and hours of operation could be.
