'GI Sings for Hope' Oct. 17 at GIHS

Grand Island will turn the spotlight on breast cancer awareness with a benefit concert.

On Oct. 17, the Grand Island Central School District and the Island community will join forces to turn the Island pink in a fundraising effort called "GI Sings for Hope."

Organizers of the event call it a concert of inspiration and "a wonderful way to bring individuals, our schools, and civic and business groups together to make a powerful statement about the strength and commitment of the people of Grand Island."

 Pink symbolizes support for breast cancer research.

The concert, set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17, will feature choruses from the Grand Island schools and the entire community. Also featured will be a special video, currently in the making spotlighting community members, groups and businesses performing their own version of a "Pink Glove Dance." Mary's Room, which provides free wigs to women undergoing cancer treatment, is one beneficiary of the proceeds of the concert. Other beneficiaries include Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center's services for breast cancer patients. Pre-concert activities will feature a basket raffle, gift boutique, baked goods sale, and a program sale listing sponsors and supporters of this effort.
